Air Fryer Country Fried Steak (Air Fryer Chicken Fried Steak) | Instant Mealtime (1)

One of my favorite comforting classics is chicken fried steak/country fried steak. Even though I’m from the west, my family has been cooking up country fried steak for years.

You’ll be surprised to find out that air fryer country fried steak is even better… no guilt or greasy smell involved. You know how when you cook fried meals on the stove and you get grease splatters everywhere? Not with this air fryer recipe.

What is Chicken Fried Steak?

Chicken fried steak is a staple in southern cooking that starts with a breaded piece of cubed steak or other meat. It’s pan-fried and crispy. It’s also served with country-style gravy.

Normally, traditional chicken fried steak is dredged in four and egg, then fried up on a pan and then served in gravy. Only, this way, it’s fried up in the air fryer.

For this recipe, we’ll make the gravy in a pan on the stove or using the sauté function of the Instant Pot.

You won’t get grease splatter anywhere with this air fryer chicken fried steak recipe. And, you’ll save yourself all the calories by not using all the grease.

All you do is spray down your country fried steaks with cooking spray.

You can alternatively make chicken fried chicken using this recipe and subbing a chicken breast for the cubed steak. You’ll also want to tenderize it so its thinner looking. To each his or her own!

How to Make Air Fryer Country Fried Steak

Season the steaks with salt and pepper and pat dry with paper towels.

Then, in a bowl, you’ll mix flour, paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.

In a separate bowl, mix the egg, buttermilk, and hot sauce and create an assembly line.

You’re going to dredge the steaks two times: dredge them in the flour, then the buttermilk. Then, shake off the excess flour and buttermilk and repeat. Dredge the steaks in the in the dry flour mixture, then the buttermilk mixture. Note: you could skip the second dredging if you’re afraid you might get a soggy mess.

Make sure any remaining flour gets pressed into the cubed steaks. Let them sit in a pan for about 10 minutes to soak up all the dredging. After 10 minutes, spray the air fryer chicken fried steak with cooking spray on both sides.

Set your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and cook for 8 minutes. Make sure the steaks have plenty of room in the air fryer. Also, remember that every air fryer is different. You may need to add more time if needed.

While the air fryer country fried steak is cooking, make the gravy:

Melt butter in a skillet over medium to low heat. Once butter is melted, whisk in flour. Then, add in the seasonings.

Turn up the heat to medium-low and add milk and heavy whipping cream.

Whisk, and let bubble up. Once it bubbles, turn the stove to low heat. This should take about 5 minutes.

Once the timer goes off on the air fryer, check to make sure the steak is thoroughly cooked with a meat thermometer.

It should read 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it’s fully cooked, serve up with mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, and green beans!

Notes

Not all air fryers are created equal:
You may need to add or remove time, depending on the make and model of your air dryer.
You may have a smaller-size air fryer. Allow enough space for the chicken fried steaks to cook to avoid a soggy mess. If needed, cook in batches. And never layer food in the air fryer.
If you want to stick to one round of dredging, feel free to do so if you don\'t want much breading.
Don\'t forget to let the steaks sit for about 10 minutes to soak up the dredging before going into the air fryer.
