I posted an Anderson’s Split Pea Soup a long time ago but have made it a hundred times since and tweaked it a fair bit. This is one of my favorite soups. I make at least one pot a month. KISS really applies with this soup. Read more This will last at least 5 days in the fridge. Longer, I think, but I’ve never had a batch hang around more than five days. Go Vegan, just leave out the bacon. See less

How to make it

  • Prep the stuff
  • Chop the onion, carrot, celery, bacon & garlic.
  • Cook it
  • 1.Place the bacon and onion in a large soup pot and sauté until bacon is cooked but not crisp.
  • 2.Add water, peas, celery, carrot, Basil, red pepper, garlic and bay leaf to the pot. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • 3.Boil on medium heat for 20 minutes, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer until split peas are tender, stirring occasionally; about 1 hr.
  • 4.Let cool until you can touch the pot without getting burned.
  • 5.Find & REMOVE THE BAY LEAF, then work it over good with a hand blender (a standing blender will work but is more work). See Photo
  • 6.This is when you add more water, if you want to. This recipe tends to come out a tad thick and I add a cup, or two, of water here & blend it in.
  • 7.Reheat just to boiling point.
  • 8.Serve or store.
  • Yes, you can use your Crock Pot (slow cooker) and I always do See Photo. Sauté the onion & bacon in a small frying pan and add that, along with everything else, to the Crock Pot. Cook on high for about an hour and then low for 3 - 4 hours. Or, just put it on low and go surfing. Eight, or so, hours later it will be ready. Careful here; when I was a lot younger, I went surfing once and wound up in Ensenada, down on the Baja. Didn’t get back for a week.
  • This should serve 6 - 8 people and don’t forget the crackers. If you’re feelin fancy put a small dollop of sour cream on the soup when served. Now days everyone wants to make THICK split pea soup. You don't want it watery but too thick is glop.
